MEST4 Linked production: Research and planning

1) Production brief:

Your Critical Investigation topic:
To what extent are females represented as sex objects in reality TV shows such as ‘Love Island’?

Your Production brief:
Print: Front cover, contents and feature article.

Length/size of production (e.g. 3 minutes, 5 pages etc.):
3 pages

Give examples of an existing media text this is similar to what you plan to produce:
TV Chpice/ OK Magazine / Reality Weekly

Give an example of an institution that would produce or distribute your planned production:
Hearst Corporation

How would your production reach its audience?
In modern day society, magazines are very accessible and can be brought in many places such as the internet, supermarkets, newsagents, specialist stores, and small magazines can also be sent in the form of an e-mail.

Who do you plan to work with on this project?
Alone

2) Research: detailed notes on at least THREE texts similar to what you are creating. What are the key conventions? What can you learn/borrow from the examples you have looked at?

TV Choice:

The price catches the readers attention first as it is a bright orange colour which stands out against the blue background, this is a technique I will use, the price is most important for this article as it is only 45p which most audiences will consider a bargain.. The main text is also in contrasting colours as the pink outline contrasts with the yellow text which helps it stand out.

OK Magazine:

Out of the three covers, this magazine looks the most professional in terms of the layout as it is quite clean and sharp with the use of boxes around text and images. The text is also longer in comparison to the other two, however, the name of the magazine is short and stands out with the use of the exclamation mark. This magazine also uses contrasting colours with blue as the background and reds/pinks/purples on top to make the text pop.

Reality Weekly:

The two main things on this cover are in yellow, first being the text which draws the attention of an audience as they would be intrigued to know what has happened and secondly the idea of winning something which is highlighted boldly in the top left corner. This is also a technique I will use as audiences are more than likely to buy the magazine if they are in the chance of gaining something. This magazine also uses boxes around texts and images to make it easier for the reader to see the different stories without it looking messy.

The key conventions are: central image, sub images, central title (main heading), sub headings, bold text, text at the top, price, barcode, taglines.

I have learnt from these magazines that they use bright colours in order to attract audiences and the text is bold as well as easy to read. Similarly, the main titles and subheadings are short and concise therefore easy to read. There is more than one image on the cover and the central image is also usually of more than one person.

3) Project schedulewhen will you shoot and edit this production? Make this a week-by-week schedule leading up to Easter.

I will shoot my pictures during the week 27/02/17 and I will begin to edit it the following week.

4) Script -For print productions, this means writing all the text for the cover, contents and feature articles.

Magazine name: JUICE WEEKLY

Main story: STAR OR STRIPPER

5) Shot list - use Microsoft Word or a template like this to help you. Remember, you need a shot list whether you are filming or carrying out a print photo-shoot - professional quality original images are essential if you want to reach the top level.
